With World Sustainability Day around the corner, REVATHI KANT, CHIEF DESIGN OFFICER, TITAN COMPANY LIMITED highlighted the importance of sustainability in the product designing process.
She said that as people around the world are fast catching up with a more sustainable and viable lifestyle, conscious consumption is not a trend anymore but has become a way of life. “Sustainability is all about having a good, purpose-driven life and leaving a better world for the generations to come,” she stated.
Explaining that why the sustainability factor for a product is decided at the Design phase, she said, “With dynamic shifts in consumer buying behaviour, sustainability in Design has become a quintessential element in the process of developing products in consideration of ecological impacts right from the initial phase to the end of the product life cycle.”
For her to be able to build a sustainable product involves continuous innovation and minimising the negative impact on the ecology. “It’s not just about calling a product sustainable, but also moving the entire ecosystem so that all parameters become far better than what they were yesterday, and at the same time dramatically reducing negative impacts on the people and the planet,” she pointed out.
“Sustainable Designs are not just limited to material intervention, but a detailed layered approach would determine Design success,” she added.
Talking about the measures that Titan Company Limited is considering to become a more meaningful and sustainable brand she said, “At Titan, we are focusing on minimalism, creating recyclable products, environmental sustainability, and social well-being. We are on the journey of being a water positive and a neutral carbon footprint company,”
According to her, the future of Design looks very optimistic and very promising. “If we want to achieve Prime Minister Modi’s vision on making India Aatmanirbhar and contribute towards sustainable manufacturing, then Design will continue to play a very crucial role in helping manufacturers achieve this primary objective,” she concluded.
